A few years back, a team of whisky enthusiasts set out on a journey to the remote Islay in the Hebrides to create their own unique whisky. Upon returning from their adventure, they couldn’t help but wonder why Devon, with its perfect climate and soil for growing barley, pristine spring water filtered through granite, and exceptional air quality, did not have its own whisky distillery.

Devon is home to exceptional local producers such as Warminster Maltings, a renowned barley malting house, and a multitude of cask beer brewers. With all the necessary ingredients for crafting a premium single malt whisky readily available in Devon, the idea of establishing a distillery seemed like a natural fit.

Drawing inspiration from his time at Bruichladdich Distillery in 2009, founder Greg Millar had a vision for Dartmoor Whisky. This vision soon became a reality with the establishment of Dartmoor Whisky Distillery, now proudly serving as your local distillery in the southwest. 

Our unique building  

Tucked away in the charming town of Bovey Tracey is the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery, a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Housed in a centuries-old building full of character and history, this Grade II listed structure has a rich past as a fire station, cinema, and civic hall before finding its new purpose as a distillery.

With the town council moving to a new location, the distillery saw an opportunity to breathe new life into the old building, transforming it into Devon’s first whisky distillery. By carefully restoring the historic building and using locally sourced ingredients, the distillery now stands proudly as a beacon of craftsmanship and tradition in the heart of Bovey Tracey.
