The Story of your local Devon Whisky Distillery: Dartmoor Whisky Distillery

Several years ago, a group of whisky connoisseurs embarked on a journey to Islay in the Hebrides to craft their own whisky. Upon their return, they questioned why Devon, with its ideal climate and soil for barley growth, clear spring water filtered through granite, and exceptional air quality, lacked a whisky distillery.

Devon boasts of outstanding local producers like Warminster Maltings, a traditional barley malting house, and a plethora of cask beer brewers. All the necessary components for a premium single malt whisky exist in Devon.

Inspired by his work at Bruichladdich Distillery in 2009, founder Greg Millar conceived the idea of Dartmoor Whisky. This vision became a reality with the assistance of Simon Crow, and the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery was established.

The Landscape of Dartmoor

Dartmoor is one of the most iconic features of Devon the beautiful landscape and rolling hills make it a wonderful place to visit with over 450 miles of footpaths it is one of the most widely enjoyed walking destinations in Devon.

Every year, as the late summer approaches, we gather the harvest of barley from Preston farm, located in the heart of Dartmoor. The region’s climatic conditions and soil composition create an ideal environment for growing the best quality barley that we use in our products. Dartmoor’s natural bounty is truly remarkable, and we are fortunate to have such a magnificent source of inspiration for our craft.

Tasting Experience Tour at Your Local Devon Whisky Distillery

We offer a unique tasting experience on Saturdays 1 pm-2 pm these experiences must be booked beforehand. Our unique tasting experience will take you through the process of making our single malt whisky from the barley in the field to enjoying a glass of each of our core 3 whiskies and our gin.

Our tasting experience is dog friendly so please bring along your furry friends we would love to meet them!

Open Bar

Our distillery bar is open every Friday and Saturday evening 4 pm – 10 pm. You can pop in for a draught beer, Dartmoor gin, Dartmoor whisky and a fully stocked bar! We even have live music events!

Events

Throughout the year we will be holding various events at Dartmoor Whisky Distillery in Bovey Tracey, on the edge of beautiful Dartmoor National Park. Our events range from Jazz nights, live music, Morris dancing and so much more. When these are confirmed, we will be sharing further details here, so please do check back.
