Local Southwest Distillery
The story of your local Southwest Distillery: Dartmoor Whisky Distillery
Several years ago, a group of whisky connoisseurs embarked on a journey to the remote Islay in the Hebrides to craft their own whisky. After their journey, they questioned why Devon, with its ideal climate and soil for barley growth, clear spring water filtered through granite, and exceptional air quality, lacked a whisky distillery.
Devon boasts of outstanding local producers like Warminster Maltings, a traditional barley malting house, and a plethora of cask beer brewers. All the necessary components for a premium single malt whisky exist in Devon.
Inspired by his work at Bruichladdich Distillery in 2009, founder Greg Millar conceived the idea of Dartmoor Whisky. This vision became a reality with the assistance of Simon Crow, and the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery was established, your local southwest distillery.
Our unique building
The town of Bovey Tracey is home to the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery, which operates out of a charming and historic building. Built in 1866, this Grade II listed space has served many purposes over the years, including as a fire station, cinema, and civic hall. Most recently, it was the seat of the town council, but as plans were made for a new civic centre, the building was in need of a new purpose. The distillery saw the potential in this unique location, which is set on an island in the heart of the town, and purchased and restored the building to its former glory. Inspired by the wild and rugged terrain of Dartmoor, the distillery crafts its whisky using locally sourced ingredients. Devon’s first whisky distillery is proud to call this historic building home.
The land scape of Dartmoor
Devon’s picturesque landscape boasts many attractions, and Dartmoor is undoubtedly one of the most iconic. The rolling hills and stunning scenery make it a popular destination for visitors, with over 450 miles of footpaths to explore. It is no surprise that Dartmoor is considered one of the best walking destinations in the region.
For many years, we have harvested barley from Preston farm, which is nestled in the heart of Dartmoor. The unique combination of climatic conditions and soil composition creates the perfect environment for growing high-quality barley. We feel incredibly lucky to have such an abundant source of natural produce to use in our products. Dartmoor’s beauty and bounty are truly remarkable and never cease to inspire us in our craft.
