Own a Cask of Dartmoor Whisky

Own a Cask: Devon’s Unique Single Malt Whisky

At Dartmoor Whisky Distillery, we pride ourselves on being a small-batch craft distillery located at the edge of Dartmoor National Park, where we create Devon’s distinctive single malt whisky. We’re thrilled to announce that we now offer the opportunity to purchase whole casks of our exquisite core expressions.

Our whiskies are crafted in a stunning ex-Cognac still that dates back to 1966, a piece that has previously produced exceptional spirits for renowned brands such as Hennessy, Martel, and Rémy Martin.

After being idle since its decommissioning in 1994, we rescued and refurbished this remarkable still, restoring it to its original splendour. Now, it’s busy creating smooth and sweet new-make spirits from locally sourced Dartmoor barley.

Own a Cask: Devon’s Unique Single Malt Whisky

Our Distillery

In 2009, our founder, Greg Millar, had an enlightening experience at the Bruichladdich Distillery on the picturesque island of Islay. Upon returning home, he was excited to learn that we had all the essentials to craft exceptional single-malt whisky right here in the UK. This discovery inspired him to establish Devon’s very first single-malt whisky distillery.

At the beginning of this venture, we were fortunate enough to have Mr. Frank McHardy, a master distiller with over five decades of experience at renowned distilleries like Springbank and Bushmills, visit us from Campbeltown, Scotland, to evaluate our project. We were overjoyed when Frank decided to join us as our master distiller. His expertise was invaluable, guiding us through each phase of the production process to help us create a truly remarkable single-malt whisky. To ensure we had the finest equipment, we searched worldwide and ultimately discovered our exquisite 1966 ex-Cognac copper still nestled in the French countryside.

We affectionately named our ex-cognac Mariannick.

Our single malt whisky

Every ingredient in our single malt whisky hails from the Southwest, and we proudly carry out all our production right here in the region. We place a high value on provenance, which is why we collaborate with local farmers cultivating barley in Dartmoor National Park and uphold the time-honoured practices of traditional malting houses like Warminster Maltings. Our beer wash is crafted according to Frank McHardy’s recipe by our partners at Dartmoor Brewery in Princetown.

After that, it’s distilled at our Bovey Tracey distillery, aged in cask, and blended with pristine Dartmoor water during both the barreling and bottling processes. We offer three main expressions: our original ex-Bordeaux Cask Single Malt, our American Oak ex-Bourbon Cask Single Malt, and our ex-Oloroso Sherry Cask Single Malt. Each one is meticulously produced at our distillery in the Old Town Hall, Bovey Tracey.

What sets our whisky apart is that we never blend different casks during the barreling and bottling stages. This means that every batch you taste from our distillery has its own character and may vary slightly from others. The whisky derives its unique colour and flavour from the diverse barrels we select, along with the sweet spirit produced by our ex-Cognac still.

We avoid any additives, colourings, or chilling processes, believing that the true essence of the cask is what makes whisky extraordinary, and we aim to showcase that authenticity.

In 2022, we were thrilled to receive accolades for all three of our whisky expressions at the Great Taste Awards. Out of more than 14,000 entries, our products were recognised for their “characterful, well-integrated, and enjoyable” qualities at one of the most prestigious food and drink competitions in the world.

    Cask Visits

You are welcome to visit your cask by appointment only. We request notice of 10 working days for any cask visit, and if a sample is requested to be collected at the time of the visit, please notify us. During your visit we will be able to give you a 1x 50cl miniature of your spirit. A maximum 1 sample per year can be drawn from the cask.

Dartmoor Whisky Distillery is a small but bust, working distillery and there will be times when visits are not possible due to the production schedule or annual leave.

    Bottling

We have included storage for ten years, but the whisky can be left to mature for longer if required. Our Master Distiller, Frank Mchardy, recommends that the sweet spot for bottling is 7-8 years of age, where you will lose less to the ‘angles’ share’ and the cask will have imparted the desirable flavour and colour to the spirit.

We can bottle your whisky for you once you decide to do so. Bottling charges will be quoted for when you instruct us for bottling.

The whisky will be bottled in a clear Nocturne glass bottle (the same shape as the Dartmoor whisky bottles) ready to create your own label design. We can label the bottles for you once supplied (at an extra cost, to be discussed at the bottling stage)

    Strength

Our standard bottling strength is 46% ABV but whisky can be bottled to a minimum of 40%. The whisky can also be bottled at cask strength, please inform us of your desired ABV.

    Angels’ share

Approximately 1-2% of the cask contents evaporate per year (the so-called Angels’ share’: at the same time, the strength decreases. There may be Spillage when the contents of the cask are bottled but this should not exceed the 1% of the total volume.

Please note the evaporation rate of each cask will vary and losses may be higher than outlined above.

    Number of Bottles

This depends on the number of factors such as maturation rate, age of the whisky, etc. on a very approximate basis, you should assume that a hogshead (250 bulk litres), bottled at 46% alc. Vol., in 70cl bottles after 10 years would yield 360 bottles and a barrel of (200 bulk litres) would yield 280 bottles.

If you decide to bottle your whisky earlier, you would achieve more volume and bottles.

    Partial Bottling

We do not offer part-bottling of your cask; we require the bottling of the whole cask.

    Transfer of Ownership

You must inform us of any change of name or address and if you wish to transfer ownership of your cask before bottling, you must seek our prior written agreement and the new owner must agree to abide by these terms and conditions of the sale.
