Own a Dartmoor Whisky Cask

Own a Dartmoor Whisky Cask: Devon’s Unique Single Malt Whisky

Here at Dartmoor Whisky Distillery, we are a small batch, craft Distillery producing Devon’s unique single malt whisky on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. We are excited to inform you all we are now selling whole casks of our beautiful core expressions.

All our whiskies are made in our beautiful ex-Cognac still that was hand-beaten in 1966 and has produced quality spirit for the likes of Hennessy, Martel, and Remy Martin for most of its life! We saved it from sitting dormant since its decommission in 1994 and refurbished it to restore it back to its former glory and now it is producing smooth, sweet new make spirt made from Dartmoor barley.

Whisky Distillery in Bovey Tracey

Our Distillery

After working at Bruichladdich Distillery on the island of Islay back in 2009, our founder, Greg Millar returned home with a lot more knowledge under his belt and was thrilled to discover that we actually have everything you need to make incredible single malt whisky right here in our little corner of the UK. So, Greg set out to start Devon’s first single malt whisky distillery.

Back at the start of our journey, Mr Frank McHardy, a master distiller with over 50 years of experience at Springbank and Bushmills Distilleries, travelled from Campbeltown in Scotland to assess our new project.

We were thrilled when Frank came on board as our Master Distiller, He guided us through each stage of our process to ensure that we produce a very fine single malt whisky.

We scoured the globe to find the very best still to create our new make spirit and found our beautiful 1966 ex-Cognac copper still in the heart of the French countryside.

We have named our ex-Cognac still Mariannick.

Our single malt whisky

All the ingredients used to produce our single malt whisky are from the Southwest and all the processing happens here in the Southwest too. Provenance is important to us, which is why we support local farmers who are growing barley on Dartmoor National Park and why we choose to support the age-old traditions of hand-turned malting houses like Warminster Maltings.

Our beer wash is produced to Franks Mchardy’s recipe by our friends at Dartmoor Brewery in Princetown, before being distilled at our distillery in Bovey Tracey, aged in cask, and then cut with pure Dartmoor water at both the barrelling and bottling stages.

We currently have three core expressions: our original ex-Bordeaux Cask Single Malt, our American Oak ex-Bourbon Cask Single Malt and our ex-Oloroso Sherry Cask Single Malt, all carefully crafted in our distillery in the Old Town Hall, Bovey Tracey.

What is also special about our whisky is that at the barrelling and bottle stages, we never mix different casks together, so each distillation you try from our distillery will be unique and could be slightly different from the next.

Our spirit develops its colour and flavour from the different barrel types we source and the sweet spirit from our ex-Cognac still. We never add any flavourings or colourings, and we do not chill filter either. We think the pure expression of the cask on the spirit is the most beautiful thing about whisky and we want to celebrate that.

In 2022, all three of our whisky expressions were awarded in the Great Taste Awards. More than 14,000 products were put through the rigorous blind judging process: and our products were dubbed “characterful, well-integrated and enjoyable” at the world’s most coveted food and drink awards.

    Cask Visits

You are welcome to visit your cask by appointment only. We request notice of 10 working days for any cask visit, and if a sample is requested to be collected at the time of the visit, please notify us. During your visit we will be able to give you a 1x 50cl miniature of your spirit. A maximum 1 sample per year can be drawn from the cask.

Dartmoor Whisky Distillery is a small but bust, working distillery and there will be times when visits are not possible due to the production schedule or annual leave.

    Bottling

We have included storage for ten years, but the whisky can be left to mature for longer if required. Our Master Distiller, Frank Mchardy, recommends that the sweet spot for bottling is 7-8 years of age, where you will lose less to the ‘angles’ share’ and the cask will have imparted the desirable flavour and colour to the spirit.

We can bottle your whisky for you once you decide to do so. Bottling charges will be quoted for when you instruct us for bottling.

The whisky will be bottled in a clear Nocturne glass bottle (the same shape as the Dartmoor whisky bottles) ready to create your own label design. We can label the bottles for you once supplied (at an extra cost, to be discussed at the bottling stage)

    Strength

Our standard bottling strength is 46% ABV but whisky can be bottled to a minimum of 40%. The whisky can also be bottled at cask strength, please inform us of your desired ABV.

    Angels’ share

Approximately 1-2% of the cask contents evaporate per year (the so-called Angels’ share’: at the same time, the strength decreases. There may be Spillage when the contents of the cask are bottled but this should not exceed the 1% of the total volume.

Please note the evaporation rate of each cask will vary and losses may be higher than outlined above.

    Number of Bottles

This depends on the number of factors such as maturation rate, age of the whisky, etc. on a very approximate basis, you should assume that a hogshead (250 bulk litres), bottled at 46% alc. Vol., in 70cl bottles after 10 years would yield 360 bottles and a barrel of (200 bulk litres) would yield 280 bottles.

If you decide to bottle your whisky earlier, you would achieve more volume and bottles.

    Partial Bottling

We do not offer part-bottling of your cask; we require the bottling of the whole cask.

    Transfer of Ownership

You must inform us of any change of name or address and if you wish to transfer ownership of your cask before bottling, you must seek our prior written agreement and the new owner must agree to abide by these terms and conditions of the sale.
