Whisky Distillery in Bovey Tracey
The story of your local Whisky Distillery in Bovey Tracey: Dartmoor Whisky Distillery
Several years ago, a group of whisky connoisseurs embarked on a journey to the remote Islay in the Hebrides to craft their own whisky. After their journey, they questioned why Devon, with its ideal climate and soil for barley growth, clear spring water filtered through granite, and exceptional air quality, lacked a whisky distillery.
Devon boasts of outstanding local producers like Warminster Maltings, a traditional barley malting house, and a plethora of cask beer brewers. All the necessary components for a premium single malt whisky exist in Devon.
Inspired by his work at Bruichladdich Distillery in 2009, founder Greg Millar conceived the idea of Dartmoor Whisky. This vision became a reality with the assistance of Simon Crow, and the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery was established, your local southwest distillery.
Our unique building
Nestled within the quaint town of Bovey Tracey lies a hidden gem – the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery. The distillery is housed in an enchanting, centuries-old edifice that exudes historical charm. Dating back to 1866, this Grade II listed building has undergone several transformations over the years, serving as a fire station, cinema, and civic hall. In recent times, the town council had made plans to relocate to a new civic centre, leaving the old building in need of a new tenant.
The distillery recognised the potential of this unique location, situated on an island in the heart of the town, and seized the opportunity. They meticulously restored the building to its former glory, bringing to life a distillery that takes inspiration from the untamed Dartmoor wilderness. Using locally sourced ingredients, the distillery has proudly become Devon’s first whisky distillery and calls this historic building its home.
The land scape of Dartmoor
Dartmoor, one of the most iconic attractions of Devon’s picturesque landscape, is renowned for its rolling hills and stunning scenery. With over 450 miles of footpaths to explore, it is no surprise that Dartmoor has become a popular destination for visitors. This region is considered one of the best walking destinations, thanks to its captivating beauty and diverse terrain.
Our connection with Dartmoor goes beyond the scenic beauty. For many years, we have sourced high-quality barley from Preston farm, nestled in the heart of Dartmoor. The perfect combination of climatic conditions and soil composition has created an ideal environment for growing barley. We consider ourselves fortunate to have such an abundant source of natural produce at our disposal, and Dartmoor’s beauty and bountiful offerings never fail to inspire us in our craft.
